Plurality
Education for Global Talent
At this particular moment, I take great pleasure in
sharing with you the origin of “Southern”,
its missions and the meaning of your choice.
In the first place, “Southern” carries
the connotation of richness in culture. The Chinese
word for “Southern” was once used in a phrase
quoted in Zhong Yong. This phrase, coined by Confucius,
goes like this : Never avenge ourselves on wickedness,
we teach with accommodating generosity instead; this
is the strength of people in Southern region and a gentle
being would be qualified enough for this virtue. Coincidentally,
being the largest high school in Malaysia, Foon Yew
High School, the “Mother” of Southern College,
also connotes accommodating generosity in its Chinese
name. |
|
| Therefore, Foon
Yew High School and Souhern College can be said to have
formed ties of kinship since some two thousand years ago
because of the cultural ideal of a gentle being.”Southern”
has since then built up its reputation by using “culture”
and will continue to do so in the future. |

Secondly, “Southern” signifies the
longitude of history. In the historical progress of Chinese
civilization, the spread and influence of Chinese culture
used to prevail towards the southern part of the country.
In relation to the southern sea faced by the Chinese and the
historical tendency of expansion towards the South, “Southern”
symbolises the spirits of adventure, pioneering, pluralism
and extensiveness of view. Southern College is exactly having
the same in its efforts to enhance the culture and educate
the future generations.
Thirdly, being the pioneer of community colleges
established by Malaysian Chinese community, Southern College
has to undertake the significant missions fallen on its shoulder.
Not only does this College have to inherit the good Chinese
cultural tradition, it also needs to cultivate qualified personnel
for the good of our society, our country and even our global
village. We take it seriously to develop a bright future for
our students. We further want them to witness the successful
combination of both traditional and modern ways of education.
As you may have been well informed, the Nanyang University
established and funded by the Chinese community in Singapore
and Malaysia in the past had ceased to exist. As “Nanyang”
and “Southern” are similar in Chinese pronunciation,
we hope for the day when Southern College becomes Southern
University, Nanyang University will gain its rebirth. We are
sure that you will be proud of “Southern” for
your coming to “Southern”.
As a conclusion, coming to “Southern”
means coming to a place which is rich in culture, exceptional
in history and organised in knowledge. Students will be cultivated
in a way that will enable them to become good at knowledge,
noble in mind and excellent in character which are much needed
in the global development of the 21st century.
Southern College welcomes
you to be part of our unique education system, cross-cultural
environment and a fun college campus.
