Learning Chinese Culture Searching Traditional Spirit

Introduction
Southern College is the first ever public-funded college approved by Ministry of Education of Malaysia to establish the Department of Chinese Studies. The Department was formally established in April, 1997. Our aim is to cultivate professionals at tertiary level.

Academically, the Department focuses not only on the study of ancient Chinese literature, history and philosophy but also research into contemporary humanities as well as Chinese Malaysian Literature and Culture. This Department was obtained the qualification judge of “Penilaian Kendiri Kusus Pengajian IPTS” in 2007.


The Characteristics of Syllabus
This Department offers a variety of courses inclusive of not only the finest traditional Chinese Classics and the local culture heritage, it emphasises also the pursuit of new academic findings. The areas of studies cover language, literature, history, culture, art and thought. Multiple and open type of learning environment are its main concern. In addition, theory and practice are to go in parallel, so are studying and travelling. Through the writing of thesis, the making of report, group discussion, interchange of creative writing, oral history, artistic performance, etc, the Department helps students to foster enquiring minds and to upgrade themselve in order to achieve their academic endeavour.

Prospects
After completion of the courses, students are entitled to have credit transfer or direct recommendation for admission to prestigious universities located in Taiwan and China. Students can also take up professions in teaching, research, publishing, news reporting, advertising, translating, administration and public relations.

Admission Requirements

  • Certificate of Unified Examination (UEC) for the Chinese Independent Secondary School (Senior Middle Level) with 3 credits
  • Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with a pass in Bahasa Malaysia and 3 credits
  • Any other equivalents
  • Priorities will be given to applications with good academic performance at Chinese, English and Bahasa Malaysia

Fees

  • The tuition and miscellaneous fees are RM15,800.00 for the whole course calculated on the basis of a total of 95 credits.
  • Fees and miscellaneous charges are payable in January, April and August each year.
  • Additional credits will be charged on the basis of RM120.00 for each credit.
