Introduction
Industrial Design is concerned with all the human aspects of machine-made products and their relationship to people and the environment. Designers are people with a desire to create. They combine practical knowledge with artistic ability to turn abstract ideas into formal designs for the merchandise we buy, the clothes we wear, the publications we read, and the living and office space we inhabit. The designer accounts for the product's human factors engineering, safety, form, color, maintenance and cost. Industrial design deals with consumer products as well as industrial products. In order to achieve these ends, designers must be involved in four major design and research activities: human behavior, the human-machine interface, the environment, and the product itself.
Course Features
Students are equipped with the conceptual processes, creative tools, management strategies and research skills for innovation in design characteristics, such as size, shape, weight, color, materials used, cost, ease of use, fitness, and safety. Issues of demographic and technological change, new materials and manufacturing techniques, social and environmental sustainability, commercial factors, consumer knowledge, design ethics, systems and services design, and entrepreneurial activity are explored with a view to creating design products, systems and services for the future. Students explore a variety of presentation techniques including digital paneling and model making using a wide range of industry-standard software and workshop prototyping facilities.
Prospects
