Introduction
The English Department was established in 1994. The department emphasizes language training, with a balance of language teaching. Furthermore, it also promotes cultural and academic understanding between east and west to prepare students for future career in commerce.
Objectives
The course is specially designed to equip its students with effective command of English for their future professional careers. Upon completion of the course, they will able to:
1. Sharpen their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English, as well as to improve their critical and analytical skills.
2. Acquire a sound knowledge of linguistics and teaching English as a second language.
3. Gain insight into the various genres of literature and,
4. Cultivate bilingual proficiency and talents to play a role in the national and regional growth.
Teaching and learning
1.Course emphasis on theory and practice of language skills and appreciation of literature.
2. Dedicated and experienced lecturers: lecturers are mostly UK, US, Australia and Taiwan graduates of varied backgrounds. Some have long period of living and working in UK and US, hence they have a better understanding of foreign culture. English lecturers are regular participants and occasional speakers of conferences, seminars workshops, and courses to equip themselves better to facilitate teaching and learning.
3. Teaching methods: Small groups are adopted for individual learning. Besides lectures, ways of teaching varied, as there are pair or group discussions, class activities, role-play, case study in problem solving and tutorials. In addition to a well- equipped multi-media language laboratory, the college also provides other audio visual aids such as computer aided language learning, language CDs and VCDs
Prospects
As there is a great demand for bilingual talents domestically and abroad Therefore English diploma graduates have better prospects whether to further their studies or to take up a career. For obtaining a degree, there are choices range from local universities to universities in UK, US, Australia, New Zealand China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Alternatively, the graduates can work in the literary or educational circle, for example, teaching English in primary or secondary schools or working for publishers as editors. Those who are good at both English and Chinese can work for the press; as translators, or creative writers. As most of the English graduates are trained to be effective communicators in English, usually they can find their niches in the commercial and industrial sectors, where they can serve in the airlines, be publicity/ communication officers, event organizers, marketing/ sales executives, public relations officers, personal assistants to company directors or secretaries etc.
