Introduction

The Modern Language Centre at Southern College was set up to enhance our vision for a bilingual college as well as a centre for e-learning. Our vision is to make Southern College a core centre for language learning in an IT savvy community with courses for students, professional and the general public. The Modern Language centre works together with other centres such as S.P.A.C.E. and School of Humanities to design language courses to compliment the main stream courses available at Southern College.

The main programme offered at our centre is the Southern College Intensive English Programme (SCIEP). It is designed to emphasize the four language skills in English which are speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is specially designed for entry level users of English as a foreign language. Other complimenting programmes include Holiday English Programmes and Pre-IELTS.

All the computers in the language lab are installed with ‘Europlus’, a unique interactive computer programme designed to teach English through IT. It offers all the benefits of traditional off-line multimedia titles like text, graphics, sound, video, and interactive distance learning features with real person-to-person interaction. All students at Southern College will have the chance to use the programme when they elect to take Practical English as part of their course work. The computers are also installed with designing programmes such as Auto-Cad and other designing tools to compliment the other centers as well as to support out existing Computer Labs.

The Modern Language Centre also oversees the running of the Intensive Writing for College Students (IWCS). As English will be made a prerequisite subject for entry into Southern College programmes, the IWCS classes will be an important step towards improving the writing skills of students as they move towards bilingualism in their studies. All students will have to take a placement test on registering with Southern College which will be set and marked by The Modern Language Centre. At the end of the 10 weeks IWCS course, students will sit for a test which will determine their prerequisite marks.

Students who would like to improve their communication skills in English are welcomed to spend time at MLC as it is the ‘English only’ room. There are English magazines and newspapers as well as games and music to make using English pleasurable and natural.
